New Codes in Effect
As of December 18, 2023, the 2021 Virginia Codes have been approved and published in the Virginia Register. The 2021 Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, Statewide Fire Prevention Code, Industrialized Building Safety Regulations, and the Amusement Device Regulations has become effective on January 18, 2024.
The new codes contain numerous changes that will affect your design and construction. January 18, 2024 is the date of adoption for the new code cycle, the 2021 cycle. The permit applicant will be allowed to choose between the 2018 or 2021 USBC code cycles for one year after the adoption date. Note that any plans submitted after January 17, 2025 will need to reflect the recent code changes.
